Will You Need an ECG?
An electrocardiogram, commonly called an ECG or EKG, checks your heart’s electrical activity. It isn’t automatically necessary for every person having plastic surgery.
Factors such as your age, cardiovascular history, other medical conditions, and the magnitude of the planned operation can affect the decision. Current preoperative guidance generally favors selective testing rather than ordering the same cardiac tests for everyone.
Are Chest X-Rays and Other Tests Routine?
Usually not. For example, current elective-surgery guidance doesn’t recommend routine chest X-rays for every person before surgery. Lung testing, additional heart studies, kidney testing, or other evaluations are typically considered when your health history or planned operation warrants them.
This is why your medical history matters so much during planning. Be prepared to discuss medications, supplements, smoking, previous surgeries, allergies, chronic conditions, and past reactions to anesthesia.
What Happens After Your Results Come Back?
Testing isn’t simply a box to check. Results can identify anemia, abnormal blood sugar, kidney concerns, or another issue that should be reviewed before surgery. In some situations, you might need additional evaluation or medical clearance before proceeding.
